Finding Purpose in Your Job: Finding Your Strengths and Seeking Opportunities

When you break it down, we spend more time at work than we do with our loved ones, and sometimes work can be, well, repetitive. Sometimes we go through “slow seasons” at work that have us feeling unmotivated or “bleh.. Alternatively to the slower times, let’s say it’s March, and you are a Tax Accountant. You are probably slammed with work, so much work that you might be forgoing doing things that bring you joy, like going for a walk, spending time with your friends, etc. It’s important that during these peaks and valleys that we find joy in our jobs. Here’s how you can find purpose in your daily work life by recognizing your strengths and asking for the opportunities that can help you grow.

1. Recognize Your Strengths

Finding purpose starts with understanding what you do best and what lights your “spark”! 

  • Self-Assessment: Take stock of your skills and strengths. What tasks do you handle effortlessly? What is your favorite part about your job? What do you like to do the most? 
  • Utilize Feedback: Sometimes, it’s hard to see your strengths from your own perspective. Think about feedback you have received from colleagues or supervisors in the past regarding things you do well! Leverage that.

 

2. Align Strengths with Your Role

Once you’ve identified your strengths, it’s important to align them with your current role. Consider these strategies: 

  • Incorporate Strengths into Daily Tasks: Find ways to utilize your strengths during daily tasks,; for example, if you are a strong leader, look for opportunities to lead meetings or projects.  
  • Build on Your Strengths: Look for ways to grow within your strengths. Research workshops, books, or events that will help you build on your strengths!

 

3. Seek Out New Opportunities

Finding purpose isn’t just about making the most of your current role; it’s also about seeking opportunities for growth and new challenges. The following are some suggestions on achieving this growth: 

  • Communicate with Your Manager: Have an open discussion with your manager about your career goals and interests. Express your desire to take on new challenges that align with your strengths and explore potential projects or roles that might be a good fit.  
  • Don’t Wait, Create!: Actively seek out and volunteer for projects or tasks that align with your strengths and interests. Keep in mind “extracurricular” opportunities outside of your daily role, such as volunteer or firm initiatives that will help you build upon your strengths. This proactive approach will demonstrate your enthusiasm and capability, further developing you as a professional.  
  • Who you Know: Build relationships within your organization and industry. Meet people at networking events and learn from them – the more you know! 

 

Conclusion 

Finding purpose in your day-to-day job involves a combination of recognizing and leveraging your strengths and seeking opportunities. 

By recognizing your passions/ strengths and building upon them, you will find more fulfillment from your job.
